How to Make Facebook Account Private
The first thing you’ll need to do is open facebook.com in your browser and log into your account. Now you’re ready to start step 1.
Step 1: Change Privacy Settings When You Post
Step one is to change the privacy settings when you post on Facebook. When you post a status update, photo, or anything else you might be sharing on your profile, you have the option to change who you want to be able to see it. Click the buttom that appears beside post in the bottom right corner.
The label of the buttom will depend on whatever your current privacy setting is. Click on another privacy option to change to that setting. You can choose from public, friends, only me, or make a custom settings, so only specific friends can see it.
You can also go back to older posts on your profile to change the privacy setting even after you’ve posted it. To do this click the privacy icon located next to the date it was posted. Then choose the privacy setting you’d like to switch it to. This makes it easy for you to pick and choose who can see certain posts on your profile.
Step two is to unauthorized any apps that are using your information. If you’ve signed into another app or website using a login with Facebook option, to save yourself some time. You might decide later that you no longer want that app to have access to your information.
To unauthorized an app you’ve logged into with Facebook, first access your account settings. Click the downward arrow in the top right corner. Then select settings. On the left side of the page click apps.
To remove any apps you want to unauthorized, hover over it with your cursor. Then click the X buttom to the right. To confirm click remove. Repeat this, to remove all the apps you’d like to own authorize.
Step 3: Control Timeline and Tagging
Step three is to control who can post on your timeline and tag you in posts. If someone else posts a picture of you or tags you in a text post, it can appear on your profile even though you’re not the one that posted it. Luckily you can change settings to control what posts show up on your timeline.
To change these settings select timeline and tagging from the settings category menu. Then look through each setting in this category and change them to suit your needs. Click the edit buttom beside each setting to make changes to it.
Step 4: Make Your Profile Harder to Find
Step four is to make your profile harder to find. One thing many people choose to do is to replace their last name with their middle name. To change your name on Facebook go to your general settings, beside the name section click Edit.
Now change your name to whatever you would like to be presented on your Facebook profile. To simply hide personal information from strangers, go to the privacy settings category. See How to Recover Deleted Facebook Photos (2018 Updates)
Now edit each privacy settings so they match what you’d like to show on your profile. You can make changes to who can see your posts and who can look you up. When trying to make it harder for people to find your profile, focus on the who can look me up section.
Step 5: Change Who Can Send You Friend Request
Step five is to change who can send you friend requests. Within the same privacy settings page as we just mentioned, you’ll see a section labeled who can contact me. Here you can control who is allowed to send you friend requests. Click edit to make changes.
Then select everyone if you’re ok with anyone on Facebook being able to send you a friend request, or friends of friends so only people who have mutual friends with you can send you a friend request.

Step six is to block or restrict anyone who bothers you on Facebook. To block someone who is bothering you go to their profile. Then click the three dots at the bottom rate of their cover photo.
Now select block from the menu that pops up below. Click confirm to add them to your blocked list. If you want the person to only be able to see whatever information you’ve made visible to the public, you can add them to your restricted list, instead of blocking them.
To do this go to your Facebook homepage. on the left side click friend lists, from the options that appear select restricted. Click add friends to list, to start selecting people you want to restrict from seeing your information and posts.
Click on a friend’s name to select them. When you’re done selecting people click finish to add them all to your restricted list.
Step 7: Check Out Your Public Profile
The last step number seven, is to check out what your profile looks like to the public, or to a specific person. This will help you ensure that you’ve set your privacy settings up properly. To do this go to your own profile. click your name at the top of your screen to get there.
Now click the three dots at the bottom of your cover photo. From the menu that appears select view as. Now you can see what your profile looks like to the general public.
If you’d like to see what it looks like to one of your friends, click view a specific person. Then type in the name of the friend whose perspective you’d like to see.
